Kid-safe Netflix filter: exclude R and TV-MA
Exclude R and TV-MA so family browsing stays age-appropriate across Netflix titles.
Open this filter setWhy Netflix profiles are not enough
Netflix lets each profile set a maturity limit, but that setting lives inside one account and one service. It does not help when you are comparing titles across apps, sharing a TV with mixed ages, or searching from a laptop that is not signed into a kids profile. Search results still mix G, PG-13, R, and TV-MA unless something else filters them.
Umami Rate sits in front of that catalog. You search movies and TV the way you already do, then include or exclude content ratings before you pick something to watch. This guide opens Netflix with R and TV-MA already excluded, so the list you see is the list you can put on in a living room.
What this preset does
The filter uses exclude mode on two ratings: R and TV-MA. Everything else on Netflix can still appear — Kids, PG, PG-13, TV-PG, TV-14, and unrated titles that TMDB does not map to those chips. Exclude is the right default for a family night: you are not pretending kids-only catalogs are complete; you are dropping the ratings you do not want in the mix.
Service is locked to Netflix so you are not paging through Disney+ or Prime results you cannot open tonight. You can add genres, switch to movies or series only, or share the URL with another household member. The link is the filter. No account is required to use it.
How to use it
Open the preset, glance at the active filter chips, and search for a title or browse the shelves. If a result still looks wrong for your household, tighten the filter — for example exclude TV-14 as well, or switch include mode to Kids, PG, and PG-13 only. Saved presets (Plus/Family) are optional; the deep link already encodes this setup.
Ratings come from TMDB and can lag or disagree with what a streamer shows on its own page. Treat this as a first pass, not a substitute for reading a title’s listing before you hit play, especially for younger kids.
FAQ
- Does this change my Netflix profile?
- No. Umami Rate does not log into Netflix or edit parental controls. It only filters the discovery list we show you.
- Will TV-14 titles still appear?
- Yes. This preset only excludes R and TV-MA. Add TV-14 to the exclude list if that is too high for your household.
